Pigeon Peas are a reliable staple crop grown in many parts of the world. They do well in poor soil, tolerate heat and drought, and often start producing within the first year.
The plants grow into large, bushy shrubs with small, attractive flowers. They’re a perennial crop in warm climates, meaning you can continue harvesting from the same plant for several years. However, they don’t handle cold temperatures well and may be damaged or killed by frost, so they’re best suited for Zones 9 and up.
Pigeon Peas can be grown in the ground or in large pots. When planted in the ground, they offer the added benefit of fixing nitrogen, which helps improve soil quality. At the end of the season, you can cut them back and use the trimmings as mulch to further enrich the soil.
The pods can be eaten fresh, shelled for tender peas to cook in various dishes, or left to dry for storage. They’re a versatile crop that can be a useful addition to many gardens.
